Authorial vision

Joel Zito Araújo's films explore the experiences of the Black population and the ways in which their history, identity and culture are represented in Brazil. His directing combines historical research, memory and social observation to challenge stereotypes, reveal inequalities and recover trajectories that are often made invisible by audiovisual media. Racism and power relations appear in his work not only as social themes, but as elements that permeate the construction of the characters, their relationships and their possibilities for existence.

Although he has excelled in documentary filmmaking, Joel Zito also does expressive work in fiction, exploring family relationships, conflicts between generations and emotional experiences. His approach moves between individual stories and collective issues, seeking to broaden perspectives on the Black population and its participation in the construction of Brazilian society.
